Learning New Skill : Sewing

I am feeling really proud of myself today after my first ever attempt in sewing using a sewing machine.

As a child, I have always seen my paternal grandmother sitting in front of a sewing machine, making dresses, curtains or repairing old clothes. She had this very old sewing machine the one that doesn’t use electricity. And I have always been amaze everytime she finished something. Imagine how a piece of different cuts of fabric turns into something beautiful.

However, I never had the talent make this masterpieces. I do know how to sew by hand but I never had a chance to learn using a machine and I never had the patience to make patterns to use to make clothing.

I remember during my highschool day in our home economics class. We were task to make a pattern for a shorts and I really had a hard time making one. I did somehow pass but I never had the chance to use that pattern to make a shorts because I opted to transfer to the Drafting class.

Also, I remember having my grandmother wanted to teach me how to use her sewing machine but I was scared at that time because I was afraid of the needle eating my fingers. So she just showed me how to use it and how to step on the padals which I also had a hard time because I always was not in sync with it. Eventually she gave up.

Thinking about it now, I wished I had tried harder. Maybe if I didn’t give up, maybe I have somehow learned how to use it.

But learning something new even though you are already old is never to late

These words were spoken to me by my patient a few days ago.

So when I saw an ad in the social media about a sale of a cricut with a free sewing machine in one of the crafting website. I immediately bought it. I was planning to buy a cricut maker after all. So this is a great chance.

So today, the sewing machine was delivered and I don’t want to wait anymore. I opened it and set up.

By the way this is the machine that I bought.

I never had set up a sewing machine in my life, so I was kind of scared that I might break it while setting it up. Although the instructions in the manual was very straight forward so it did help me a lot.

After setting it up, I was trying to find what can I practice to sew.

By the way, this is my first time and I never had the chance to see any video tutorial about using a sewing machine. The only help I am using is the manual that comes with the sewing machine itself.

For someone who never used a sewing machine before, this machine is easy to use.

So I remembered that I have a jogging pants that was very long and I had only partly taped it and the other leg has a little bit of hand sewn thread that is halfway removed.

So I tried sewing that and oh my… I had to do it a couple of times.

This is the amount of thread that I used from doing it a couple of times.

I kept failing, it would either get tangled from the top thread or there would be a pool of thread on the fabric and it would stop sewing, so I have to remove all the stitches all over again.

Thankfully my husband who keeps passing by would kept giving me encouragement or else I would have given up because I can almost see myself using all the new thread that I just bought.

In the end, after a couple of tries and halfway through my patience. I finished it and this is the final output.

It is still not straight but I am happy with it as it looks acceptable in the front.

This output just shows that even though it is your first time doing something, you can still have a good output if you just try. And you should never give up on something just because it was difficult.

This is the picture of the back stitch. I know it is really ugly but for a first timer in sewing machine, I can live with this.

In will make sure to learn more on how to use it and practice again and again. Maybe later on I can make a little dress for my baby. It is a wishful thinking but I believe practice makes perfect.
